Since its inception in 1979, Peter Lehmann Wines has emerged as one of Australia’s most respected, energetic and innovative wine producers. All operations are carried out on a single site located near Tanunda, in the heart of the internationally famous Barossa Valley, South Australia.
Stonewell is made from the very best of the superlative Barossa Shiraz vineyards available to Peter Lehmann. The grapes are drawn only from low-yielding vineyards in the drier western areas of the Barossa Valley. These vineyards, some planted well over 100 years ago, produce sparse bunches with tiny berries – small black jewels– the secret of Stonewell Shiraz.
The 2001 vintage, was very low yielding because of the long hot dry growing season in the lead up to harvest. Consequently, this 2001 Stonewell Shiraz is a wine of great depth and intensity.
Fruit Sources: Low yielding, predominantly dry-grown vineyards in the Stonewell, Kalimna, Koonunga, and Ebenezer districts of the Barossa Valley.
Colour: wonderful depth of colour with the first hints of maturity at the rim.
Bouquet: A complex bouquet of black fruits, dark chocolate dusted prunes, liquorice, and vanillan oak characters.
Palate: An explosion of dark chocolate and prunes reined in by fine, dusty tannins and harmoniously integrated oak. It is a wine of superb structure, and deep velvet fruit so characteristic of Stonewell Shiraz.
Maturation: Fermented and thence matured for 18 months in a mixture of new French (83%) and American (17%) oak hogsheads. Bottled 12 December, 2002 for release in July 2006.
Cellaring: A wine which can be confidently cellared under ideal conditions for many years.
