La Grande Dame 1998 is based on a blend of eight Grands Crus traditionally used for this wine. The blend is dominated by Pinot Noir grapes (62.5%) which come from Ay in the vallée de la Marne and Verzenay, Verzy, Ambonnay and Bouzy in the Montage de Reims. The Chardonnay grapes, (37.5%) come from vineyard plots in Avize, Oger, and Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Côte des Blancs.

The 1998 Brut Vintage follows the traditional Pol Roger formula of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay from up to 20 Grand and Premier Cru vineyards in the Montagne de Reims, the Grand Vallée de la Marne and the Côte des Blancs: the Pinot Noir comes from the villages of Cumières, Champillon, Aÿ, Ambonnay, Mareuil, Chigny, Rilly, Bouzy and Mailly; the Chardonnay comes from Le Mesnil, Oger, Vertus,Oiry, Cuis and Chouilly. 1998 was a year of extremes and contrasts during the growing season but in the end a final climatic somersault proved vital in producing a stunning vintage. The 1998 is golden in colour with a nose of dried and ripe fruits as well as hints of nougat, butter and toast. In the mouth it is fleshy and ample but with remarkable refreshing acidity and length. Classically balanced this will continue to drink well for a decade or more. Typically this has the power to match fine dining and would work well with lobster or other crustaceans as well as rich or pungent or spicy dishes.

The 1996 vintage shows all the hallmarks of a truly outstanding year with high natural sugar content in the grapes and an excellent level of acidity indicating an exceptional overall balance and long ageing potential. A clear yellow-gold in colour, the wine is overt and generous with hints of fresh butter, nuts and even tobacco. The initial freshness tends to give way to a more powerful range of deeper aromas such as liquorice, wood and leather and reveals the great complexity. Given its youth the wine still holds a lot in reserve but it has a masculine structure and phenomenal length. Ideal as an accompaniment to roasted game and manages to balance itself between force and finesse, presence and delicacy.

Its extremely fine bubbles produce abundant effervescence. As the ambient warmth develops, initial fruity and delicate notes lead to a bouquet that gradually unleashes a sensation of opulence. However, the combined effect is one of elegant finesse and wonderful presence, promising great ageing potential. The complexity and potential found on the nose are also revealed in the mouth, with an attractive balance of berry fruit, liquorice and citrus notes. The highly vertical palate has great length and excellent persistence.

A blend of 45% Premier cru Chardonnay and 55% Premier cru Pinot Noir of which 18% is still wine fermented in oak. Ruinart developed the first rose which was followed by Laurent-Perrier. Aromas of sweet ripe red berry fruits-raspberries, strawberries and glace` cherries.The chardonnay component gives a creamy edge and there is an added smoky richness and roundness from the barrel fermented still wine addition. It is not sweet but this was designed and will appeal to the ladies.
