Bruno Clair, Vosne Romanee 'Champ Pedrix', 2003 (6 bottles @ $116 per bottle)
88 Points. "Given the location of its vineyard, on the rocky steep slope above Vosne-Romanee's famous grand crus, I was surprised at how well Clair's Vosne-Romanee Champs Perdrix performed in 2003. Though hailing from a limestone-dominated terroir with poor water retention, it displayed a structured yet ripe personality. Spicy black fruit-scented, it is light to medium-bodied, filled with blackberry, cherry and cassis flavors, and possesses a lingering finish. Projected maturity: now-2010." 93 Points. "Blackberries and cassis can be discerned in the nose of the big, bold 2001 Clos Vougeot. An inky, enormously deep, medium-bodied wine, it slathers the palate with intensely flavored black cherries, a myriad spices, juniper berries, toast, and hints of licorice. Powerful, fleshy, and fresh, it has a sumptuous finish that exhibits some road tar-like flavors. Projected maturity: 2005-2012." Wine Advocate # 147, Jun 2003

Explosive nose of fresh earth, crushed rosemary and a hint of mocha merge seamlessly with dense, concentrated, sappy flavors supported by solid, ripe tannins buffered by excellent mid-palate sap. There is good grip and solid flavor authority and an appealing note of finishing minerality.
