93 Points. "Blackberries and cassis can be discerned in the nose of the big, bold 2001 Clos Vougeot. An inky, enormously deep, medium-bodied wine, it slathers the palate with intensely flavored black cherries, a myriad spices, juniper berries, toast, and hints of licorice. Powerful, fleshy, and fresh, it has a sumptuous finish that exhibits some road tar-like flavors. Projected maturity: 2005-2012." Wine Advocate # 147, Jun 2003

92 Points. "This is up there with the quality of fine '99s. Remarkably supple, rich, complex, layered with mocha, chocolate, espresso, toasted coconut and loads of ripe black currant flavors. Silky as they get". Wine Spectator on-line.

The grapes mature early here, but still give wines of great finesse, with a lace-like texture, which lines the palate, with superb length. The inherent complexity of a 'grand cru' can be felt fairly quickly, it is an easy wine to approach. A wine which can be drunk young, but which sometimes surprises with its longevity. Clos Vougeot is a wine which is always mature, and its texture will always show finesse. Its vinification will aim for more extraction than average (by breaking up the cap, for example) in order to obtain a little more length. This wine reacts well to new casks, particularly to Tronçais oak. It quickly expresses the style of the vintage but needs to be matured in a way that will bring out its depth.

90 Points. "A deft touch of wood sets off an elegant aromatic profile that features a classic Gevrey nose of pungent iron-infused earth, underbrush and game along with primarily cool red fruit that merges into concentrated, precise and balanced flavors, all wrapped in an austere and firm but not aggressive finish. A quality villages and worth a look." Burghound 2007.

91 Points. "Here the deft wood treatment is almost perfectly integrated because even though it's not invisible, it should be soon as the riper, pure and refined upper register red fruit and mineral notes are allowed free rein to shine. The rich, generous and precise medium weight flavors are harmonious and vibrant if not quite as complex as those of the Combe d'Orveau yet they're slightly longer." Burghound Jan 2007.

94 Points. "An almost improbably elegant and pure nose of redcurrant, leather, kirsch, plum and tea and leather hints lead to explosively spicy, powerful and linear full-bodied flavors that culminate in a kaleidoscopic finish of breathtaking proportions. The only nit on this beauty is a hint of warmth though this may diminish with time as the flavors take on more weight and depth. A beauty in the making and one that will age for more than 2 decades." Burghound Jan 2006.

95 Points. "Inky purple, fresh and compelling, with blackberry and violet aromas and flavors. If you close your eyes, Syrah comes to mind for a moment, but the tannin structure is different. Supple and silky before the fine tannins take over, this will require patience to reap the full rewards. Best from 2012 through 2040". Wine Spectator on-line.

Explosive nose of fresh earth, crushed rosemary and a hint of mocha merge seamlessly with dense, concentrated, sappy flavors supported by solid, ripe tannins buffered by excellent mid-palate sap. There is good grip and solid flavor authority and an appealing note of finishing minerality.
