Ciabot Berton , Barolo Roggeri, 2001 (6 bottles @ $92.00 per bottle)

Sister and brother Paola and Marco Oberto took over management of this wonderful property in the heart of La Morra in 1990 and began to make their own wines after their dad Luigi had been selling the grapes to others for decades. By the end of the 90's writer Nicolas Belfrage had observed that "In their quiet way they could be heading for something seriously good". The Obertos can't be far off now! These are classic La Morra's; while each of the wines, Dolcetto, Barbera and the Nebbiolos are layered and intriguing, they also have the commune's characteristic rich and silky generosity.

Tommaso Bussola, Ripasso, 2003 (6 bottles @ $40.90 per bottle)

Bussola's vineyards on the slopes around Negrar are in the heart of Valpolicella's Classico zone, the epicentre of Valpolicella. The difference between the pedigree vines and methods here, compared to the vast flatlands where wines are also called Valpolicella, provides dramatic contrast. The depth of a Bussola wine sees the dark and saturated maraschino cherry fruit hosting other complexities of herbs, earth and spice. The process of ripasso adds more elements again. The newly fermented and racked Valpolicella is run over the lees/skins of last years Amarone and with a brief refermentation comes the infusing of some of Amarones richly herbal, chocolate, raisins and dried cherry characters into the round and juicy maraschino cherry fruit of the Valpolicella. This combo is fantastic and is an exception to the general rule that there is no quality result in taking shortcuts with wine. One result of ripasso is to make an already food-friendly wine more able to partner really rich and earthy dishes. Long, dark braises, with mushroom, and even soy, vinegar and chilli, fall easily to ripasso's charms.

Angelo Gaja, Langhe Costa Russi, 2003 (6 bottles @ $649.93 per bottle)

91 Points. "The 2003 Costa Russi is a noticeably bigger and more powerful wine than the Barbaresco. Although it is less expressive in its aromatics, it shows greater palate presence, with suggestions of super-ripe black cherries, tobacco and earthiness on a full-bodied frame with notable depth and a concentrated yet open-knit personality."
