Palliser Estate, Pinot Noir, 2006 (6 bottles @ $38.90 per bottle)

Palliser Estate, Pinot Noir, 2006 (6 bottles @ $38.90 per bottle)

“5 Stars. This beauty romped straight to five stars on all of the judges’ score-sheets. Deeply coloured, with an array of fresh cherry, spice and toast aromas, it is mouthfilling, concentrated, firm and authoritative, with a strong surge of ripe, black-fruit flavours, mature tannins and a lengthy finish” . Ata Rangi, Pinot Noir, 2006 (6 bottles @ $69.90 per bottle)

Ata Rangi, Pinot Noir, 2006 (6 bottles @ $69.90 per bottle)

“Ata Rangi is the king of Martinborough, and 2006 is a stunning example of its power. This wine is supple, arrestingly long, bold in its blue fruit character, and yet savoury, spicy, and sappy too. The colour is a brilliant dark purple crimson, and the finish of it an intricate arrangement of minerals and tannins. It’s a new world pinot noir for the new world to be proud of. Drink: 2012-2020. 97 points”. Campbell Mattinson, www.winefront.com.au

Felton Road, Block 3 Pinot Noir, 2007 (6 bottles @ $96.15 per bottle)

Felton Road, Block 3 Pinot Noir, 2007 (6 bottles @ $96.15 per bottle)

The classic signature of Block 3: crushed herb and chocolate, leads the nose as well as the palate of this wine where raspberry, cherry and boysenberry can be detected supporting the mid-palate. It is both rich yet transparent in the mouth, serious and focussed, with crisp minerality and great energy, driving the flavours through to an exceptionally long finish of rich chocolate mocha soaked in raspberry with earthy depths and toasted highlights. A definitive Block 3.

Craggy Range, Aroha Martinborough Pinot Noir, 2006 (6 bottles @ $106.50 per bottle)

92+ Points. "The 2006 Aroha Pinot Noir is a field selection from the Te Muna vineyard in Martinborough, hand-picked, de-stemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts and five daily punchdowns before being matured in French oak of which 35% is new. The nose is unassuming at first: it takes a while before its complexity becomes apparent with black cherries, rose petals and even a touch of tar. The palate is medium-bodied and very well-balanced with a grainy second half with touches of black pepper and once again, tar. Introspective and cerebral, this could merit a higher score in a couple of years time. Wine Advocate Issue #176, Apr 2008. This wine was shown from barrel at the New Zealand Pinot Noir Symposium in February 2007 and was by far the best wine of the hundreds on show. This is as good as Martinborough and Te Muna gets.

Neudorf, Moutere, Pinot Noir, 2005 (6 bottles @ $61.80 per bottle)

Neudorf, Moutere, Pinot Noir, 2005 (6 bottles @ $61.80 per bottle)

Youthful, purple hue in the glass with a complex nose of cracked pepper, dark summer berries, black cherry and chocolate, combined with visceral, earthy characters, dried wild herbs and excellent but unobtrusive supporting oak. Palate: Initial savoury / black fruit entry carries through a mouth filling, richly structured palate, the texture of soft leather. An underlying mineral acidity supports this richness, adding a certain juiciness and considerable length. Overall a wine of complexity and finesse.

Fromm, Clayvin Vineyard, Pinot Noir, 2004 (6 bottles @ $67.80 per bottle)

Fromm, Clayvin Vineyard, Pinot Noir, 2004 (6 bottles @ $67.80 per bottle)

Rating 90, 4 stars. “A dense and quite complex wine in a lean Burgundian style. Red cherry, plum, briar and reasonably strong oak. Fairly austere at this stage, though wines from this hillside vineyard have a proven record of ageing very well. Good drinking now or in the next 6 years”. Gourmet Traveller Wine, Bob Campbell MW

Felton Road, Pinot Noir, 2007 (6 bottles @ $62.80 per bottle)

Felton Road, Pinot Noir, 2007 (6 bottles @ $62.80 per bottle)

A very floral, perfumed, classic Pinot Noir nose: fruit, violets, spice and bramble, with nothing in excess. Creamy and weighty across the mid-palate, very flowing, almost juicy sweetness with just enough dusty tannins kicking in to complement a dark finish with hints of espresso and chocolate. Complete, complex and perhaps close to the ultimate expression for a Felton Road Pinot Noir.
