Escarpment, Kupe Pinot Noir, 2006 (6 bottles @ $77.85 per bottle)
90 Points. "The 2006 Kupe Pinot Noir uses 15% whole bunch and matures in 50% new oak. Tasted twice, this displays a dense nose of primal fruits with dark cherry, cranberry and a touch of rose petals followed by a compact, tannic palate with dark cherry and boysenberry fruit. Very refined on the finish with just a touch of astringency, this is nonetheless a very impressive, opulent expression of Pinot Noir that merits 2-3 years in bottle before opening." Wine Advocate Issue #176, Apr 2008. Larry McKenna is the master of Martinborough Pinot Noir and the (not so) new venture in Te Muna road is now hitting it's strides with world-beating wines of power and elegance.

“Ata Rangi is the king of Martinborough, and 2006 is a stunning example of its power. This wine is supple, arrestingly long, bold in its blue fruit character, and yet savoury, spicy, and sappy too. The colour is a brilliant dark purple crimson, and the finish of it an intricate arrangement of minerals and tannins. It’s a new world pinot noir for the new world to be proud of. Drink: 2012-2020. 97 points”. Campbell Mattinson, www.winefront.com.au

95 Points. "The stunning 2006 Pinot Noir is a realization of everything I suspect Rolfe dreamt of when planting the first vines in the early 1980's. Using 20% whole clusters and matured for 18 months in 30% new French oak, this wine is distinguished by its spine-tingling tension and tautness on the palate. Its ethereal balance and intensity of fruit suggest this could easily age over 10+ years." Wine Advocate Issue #176, Apr 2008.
