Escarpment, Martinborough Pinot Noir, 2006 (6 bottles @ $44.90 per bottle)

Perfume, elegant fruit flavours, and soft ripe tannins are all hallmarks of this exceptional Pinot Noir. It was harvested from our Te Muna Road property, Cleland and Bunny vineyards in Martinborough.

A small harvest has created typical Escarpment style with ripe fruit and attractive texture, due to an extended warm ripening season. Traditional open topped fermentation combined with intensive hand plunging and gentle pressing has all combined to insure a most arresting wine. It was elevated in 100% French oak of which 30% was new for 12 months.

Inspired by the classic wines of Burgundy, this Pinot noir will cellar gracefully for up to 10 years gaining spice and complexity. The wine is a true reflection of both Martinborough’s unique terroir and the skills and experience of winemaker Larry McKenna.

Escarpment, Kupe Pinot Noir, 2006 (6 bottles @ $77.85 per bottle)

90 Points. "The 2006 Kupe Pinot Noir uses 15% whole bunch and matures in 50% new oak. Tasted twice, this displays a dense nose of primal fruits with dark cherry, cranberry and a touch of rose petals followed by a compact, tannic palate with dark cherry and boysenberry fruit. Very refined on the finish with just a touch of astringency, this is nonetheless a very impressive, opulent expression of Pinot Noir that merits 2-3 years in bottle before opening." Wine Advocate Issue #176, Apr 2008. Larry McKenna is the master of Martinborough Pinot Noir and the (not so) new venture in Te Muna road is now hitting it's strides with world-beating wines of power and elegance.
