Stylistically this is a New World Pinot with an elusive Old World dimension. It is strong and expressive and already very approachable, yet discreetly framed by lots of very fine, subtle tannins.
Brilliant deep red colour, generous and inviting nose of ripe and classic cherry and varietal aromas with a sweet clay and hay terroir note. There are hints of chocolate, mocha, herbal and rose-leaf flavours. Ripe and classic cherry aromas with sweet clay and hay terroir note. Complex and silky with fine, subtle tannins. (December 2005) Cellaring potential 2012
The palate is silky and complex. Still very young and slightly closed at first, the wine opens up beautifully in the glass and will gracefully evolve in the bottle over the next few years.
This gently sun facing vineyard was love at first sight for Georg Fromm. From the very first moment he realised the potential of this most beautiful hillside site, which was planted by a local viticulturist and his wife with only one passion, to grow fine red grapes. The soil has 150mm - 200mm topsoil over various clay forms, ranging from blue clay through to red iron bearing clay. There are areas with standard clay and parts where the clay has metamorphosed into crumbly rocks. This complex soil structure reflects in the wines as a distinctive mineral character. Close planting and the enormous effort put into the vineyard was crucial in order to produce the top quality wines envisaged by Fromm Winery.
