Kumeu River, Mates Vineyard, Chardonnay, 2006 (6 Bottles @ $57.50 per bottle)

Kumeu River, Mates Vineyard, Chardonnay, 2006 (6 Bottles @ $57.50 per bottle)

Both the Kumeu River Estate and Mates Chardonnays make Wine Spectator U.S.A. Top 100 Wines of the Year and have done for many years which shows the class and consistency of one of N.Z. best chardonnays. Hand harvested, whole bunch pressed, indigenous yeast fermentation, 100% malo-lactic fermentation. 2006 was a spectacular vintage and our Chardonnays across the board are ripe floral and delicious. Mate's Vineyard is always set apart from our other Kumeu River Chardonnays with its lifted sweet fruit aroma that is akin to pears. On the palate we see the extra concentration, and length of flavour but the wine still seems more refined and taut than the Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay. Certainly a wine that will benefit from bottle age of 4-6 years." M.Brajkovich.

Ata Rangi, Craighall Chardonnay, 2006 (6 bottles @ $53.95 per bottle)

A stylish wine, understated, elegant and charming, fragrant with hints of stone fruit, citrus and tropical fruit, and a suggestion of nuts. Its texture, harmony and length, rather than in-your-face flavours, mark it as a fine wine. Charmian Smith, ODT, 20 Feb 2008

Pegasus Bay, Virtuosso Chardonnay, 2005 (6 bottles@ $74.85 per bottle)

Pegasus Bay, Virtuosso Chardonnay, 2005 (6 bottles@ $74.85 per bottle)

The wine is a star bright lemon colour. Impressions of yellow plums, white peaches, nectarines and melon seem to reflect off a core of citrus fruits, especially limes, lemons and grapefruit. These are overlain with savoury elements, evoking the smoky aromas of a wood fired barbeque of white meats, mushrooms and sweet corn. This complex array of elements is refined and elegant, rather than upfront and brash. While the palate entry is restrained and unassuming, the wine gradually expands in the mouth to become broad-shouldered, muscley, taut and powerful. There is a decisive spine of acidity and minerality which run through the wine, extending into a long, lingering after-taste.

Neudorf, Moutere, Chardonnay, 2006 (6 bottles @ $61.80)

Neudorf, Moutere, Chardonnay, 2006 (6 bottles @ $61.80)

Light gold with nuance of green. An integrated nose pinned with mineral "wet slate" notes alongside creme caramel, grapefruit, melon and an appealing sur-lees character. A silken mouth-feel coats the richly fruited palate with an imbedded thread of linen-like phenolics drawing the whole package into focus. A complex, serious, cool climate Chardonnay, already looking classy in its youth.

Fromm, Clayvin Vineyard, Chardonnay, 2004 (6 bottles @$64.60 per bottle)

5 stars.”Fromm’s premier Chardonnay, grown on the southern flanks of the Wairau Valley, was previously labelled La Strada Reserve, but since the 2001 vintage has been called Clayvin Vineyard (the clay soils, says winemaker Hätsch Kalberer, give ‚a less fruity, more minerally and tighter character’). Tasted in 2005, the 1996 vintage revealed exceptional weight, power and longevity. The pale lemon/green 2003 vintage (4 ½ Starts) is steely and intense. Fermented with indigenous yeast and matured for 16 months in French oak Barrique (none new), it is very youthful and fresh, with citrus, slightly biscuity, almost floral aromas. The palate is crisp and bone-dry, with racy acidity and deep grapefruit and slightly toasty flavours, minerally and flinty. A strong candidate for cellaring. Drink 2007-2012. Esk Valley, Reserve Chardonnay, 2005 (6 bottles @ $42.00 per bottle)

This is an elegant and restrained style of chardonnay. The nose has a citrus and mineral component with hints of meal, biscuit and toast from barrel fermentation and ageing. The wine is full bodied with stonefruit and citrus nuances and an elegance which would suggest excellent ageing potential. The wine is complex and long on the palate.
