A blend of 45% Premier cru Chardonnay and 55% Premier cru Pinot Noir of which 18% is still wine fermented in oak. Ruinart developed the first rose which was followed by Laurent-Perrier. Aromas of sweet ripe red berry fruits-raspberries, strawberries and glace` cherries.The chardonnay component gives a creamy edge and there is an added smoky richness and roundness from the barrel fermented still wine addition. It is not sweet but this was designed and will appeal to the ladies.

I know enough about the vintages up to 2006 to be sure I have not and will not taste a greater young champagne than this wine, so I must break with long-held practice and give it the perfect Bo Derek 10, or the Robert Parker 100 points. The '96 Krug has incredible intensity but it is the length of the palate and the persistence of the aftertaste that take it into the vinous stratosphere. La Grande Dame 1998 is based on a blend of eight Grands Crus traditionally used for this wine. The blend is dominated by Pinot Noir grapes (62.5%) which come from Ay in the vallée de la Marne and Verzenay, Verzy, Ambonnay and Bouzy in the Montage de Reims. The Chardonnay grapes, (37.5%) come from vineyard plots in Avize, Oger, and Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Côte des Blancs.
